The Sonna war proved that ship to ship combat did not just only mean lasers and missile weapons, but enemy boarders as well. When nearing destruction, Sonna would attach their ships and attempt to board. As a race, they were far more powerful physically than humans, and Sol ships in contact with them would incur tremendous casualties trying to ward borders away. Many Sol ships would be lost in battle when disabled -- what was left of the crew was not enough to keep the ship combat ready. The Benevolence was introduced as a place a crippled ship could limp to, and have crew replacements and advanced medical bays readied to restore the ship to some semblance of functionality. When the Genari wars began, it was brought back to service as an even more critical support vessel with all the Genari Marine assaults as part of a Genari strike tactic.
