Like the protochrysalis, it emits a very strong organic energy signature, and can slowly move and 'communicate' with other hive organisms. Perhaps this failure in molting to a Neolith has become a major benefit of Hive organisms that take advantage of it -- bringing it with them to a hostile region, and using its regenerative properties to synergistically heal each other a lot faster than without it.
